Maroons head to Dillon for Saturday Basketball Doubleheader
The Butte Central boys and girls basketball teams are back in action this Saturday for a Southwest A doubleheader at B.W. Lodge Gymnasium. The boys will start things out at 4pm while the girls will follow at approximately 5:30.
The Butte Central boys are coming off a notable defensive performance against East Helena Thursday night where they ran past the Vigilantes 72-27 but will have their hands full with the Terry Thomas-coached Beavers who, as you remember, were the only loss on BC's otherwise perfect record during last year's state championship run. This year's Dillon squad, like Butte Central, is 2-1 on the young season and both teams have lost to Lewistown. The Golden Eagles got the better of Dillon 69-60 last weekend after beating Butte Central 79-66. The Beavers got wins over Polson in their season opener 78-44 and last night 68-45 over Corvallis and feature two of the conference's top scorers in Carter Curnow who is averaging 14.3 points per game and Max Davis averaging 11.7. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the Maroons and the Southwest A are led by Dougie Peoples' 25.3 points per game while swingman Kyle Holter can be counted on to do whatever Coach Kelly may ask of him. Other key members of this year's squad are post Eric Loos, forward Zane Moodry and guard Jack Keeley.
What do we know about the Dillon girls? Well, they are undefeated and are led by another standout athlete from the Fitzgerald clan. Last night, Halie Fitzgerald had 18 as the Beavers ran their record to 3-0 with a 62-21 drubbing of Corvallis on the road. Sydney Peterson and Kylie Konen contributed 14 each in the win. Petersen is the Beavs' early scoring average leader coming in at just under 15 per game. Butte Central on the other hand is 0-3 but can boast the services of Brooke Badovinac who last year broke the Mining City single season scoring record for boys OR girls. Brookie had 32 in last night's 62-45 loss to East Helena while Mollie Drew added 11.
