Oredigger ladies: from the frying pan into the fire
The Orediggers were on the road for an exhibition game with the Lady Griz in Missoula yesterday. The game marks the first meeting between the Lady Griz and Orediggers since Brian Holsinger (and his assistant Nate Harris) took over the program a year ago. Coach Holsinger was the head coach of Montana Tech for 2 seasons, 2005-06 and 2006-07, going 6-23 his first season, and 16-13 in his second year. Coach Harris played for Montana Tech and was an assistant coach in the Oredigger men’s program.
The whistle blew, and the Diggs shot right out of the gate, hitting 50% from the floor in the first 10 minutes. Tavia Rooney had 8 points in the first, Redshirt Freshman Aubrie Rademacher had 6, and the Diggs led 21-20 after the first quarter.
The Lady Griz were able to shake off the first 10 minutes and put together a run over the middle quarters that the Diggs were never able to recover from, outscoring Montana Tech 50-16 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
The final score from Missoula, The Lady Griz 87, Montana Tech 56.
Tech was led by Tavia Rooney with 15 points, and 6 rebounds. Aubrie Rademacher finished with 11 points and 3 rebounds. Challis Westwater and Liv Wangerin each scored 6, and Dani Urich and Soda Rice with 5 apiece.
The Orediggers will head south to play a pair of games during the Cactus Classic in Arizona. The first game for the Lady Diggs will be Wednesday at noon against the #14 team in the country, Vanguard University. Vanguard has 3 players in double digits, Hallee Si’I is their leading scorer at 17 points a game, post Melissa Akullu averages 15 points, and 10 rebounds a game. And Lauren Baumgartner gets 13 a game.
On Thursday at 10 am, the Diggs will take on the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon University. The Mounties (8-1) jumped into this week’s top 25 poll at #20 in the country, after not being ranked in the previous poll. Eastern Oregon has 3 ladies averaging in double digits, Sailor Liefke, Bayley Brennan, and Beverly Slater all averaging 13 points a game.
The Diggs are led by Tavia Rooney with 12 points and 7 rebounds a game, Aubrie Rademacher is also in double digits, at 10 points a game, Dani Urick with 9.
The Diggs will return home for 2 non-conference games in the HPER the 29th, and 30th before the Frontier Conference gets back underway in the new year.
