This Huge, Surprising Donation is Great for Butte’s Future
BUTTE, MT - You may have seen my articles posted on here from time to time. Some talk about sports, some talk about large manmade holes, and some talk about crazy conspiracies about the solar eclipse. No matter what I'm writing about, I always try my best to gush about Butte, because, well, there is a TON of things to gush about!
But that doesn't mean our beloved historic location doesn't exist without its issues. We only have a few grocery store shopping options, the biggest of course being Walmart, though prices stay relatively low as compared to the rest of the state. Butte also has concerns over the repercussions over its rich mining past, which continues to be debated to this day. One issue in particular, however, is very telling. Crime has been steady over the past few years, with an index rating of 3 out of 100 (100 being the safest). Sounds scary, but don't be alarmed: we all know most crimes being committed are property crimes—not violent. But do you see what's so telling about that?
Let me ask another question: why do you think people commit property crimes? Being a former student of sociology, you learn property crimes are committed due to a few different factors, but predominantly led by those who are impoverished, those who are addicted to drugs, and those who are unemployed. In other words, those who feel helpless and/or hopeless. As someone who's had property crimes committed against them, it's a hard pill to swallow knowing Butte suffers from these deep-rooted issues—with no one leading cause or force to blame.
How do we got about these known issues? Is there any hope? Of course there is. One program in particular that is aiming to help our small but proud community is Butte Rescue Mission, a noble mission and one that has seen its share of success in assisting those who need it.
As recently reported by our friends over at the Montana Standard, the Butte Rescue Mission—who has been in the midst of raising funds and awareness for a building conversion project—has just received a whopping $200,000 donation from The Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation. The donation directly impacts the expansion project by providing essential funds needed to enhance the Rescue Mission's capabilities. By expanding its infrastructure, the Mission can offer more beds, improved facilities, and a wider range of services to those in need, including individuals experiencing homelessness, families in crisis, and veterans. This expansion is not just about physical space but also about the ability to provide a safe haven and a pathway to recovery and independence for many.
But what does this mean for the rest of Butte? Well, I believe this donation sends a powerful message to the rest of Butte. It highlights the importance of social responsibility and the explosiveness of collective action in addressing Butte's challenges. By stepping up, the Washington donors are setting an example for others—individuals, businesses, and organizations—to take action themselves. Plus, it inspires people to donate more! What's that? YOU want to donate? Well here, let me help you with that: just click these words.
I genuinely love Butte, and I know you do too. Are you excited to see where Butte goes? What do you think is in store for Butte America?
