Finally a reason to put on that 2022 Halloween costume for real, but of course, if you're a Butte cornhole player, every day is for real.  Thursday night at the Butte Brewing Company, 465 E. Galena, the Montana Tech student chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals will be hosting a cornhole tournament and costume contest to raise money for the club and candy for the Southwest Montana Veterans Home.  The candy will then be handed out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween at the Veterans Home, 65 Veteran's Circle, where club president Royce Bird says the chapter is very active.  In fact, Tech ASSP members will be at the Veterans Home from 3 to 5pm on Halloween to assist with handing out candy.  The safety club has also organized an event to purchase and provide care packages for each of the Butte Veterans homes.  They are collaborating with both the explosives (ISEE) club and general contractors (AGC) club to donate items and put together the care packages.

Why the Veterans Home?

Bird has previous experience working with Veterans in Alaska which stemmed her passion to work for and with, what she calls, "amazing people".  Bags of candy will be accepted as an entry fee for the cornhole tournament which will begin at 5pm, but if you want to do it the old fashioned way, ten bucks will get you in as well.  Cash raised will go back to ASSP and the candy will be used Halloween night at the Veterans Home.  In addition, Butte Brewing will be having "pint night" during the event as well, where a dollar from every pint sold will go ASSP.  Prizes will be awarded for the top costume of the evening as well as the winners of the cornhole tournament.

Who is ASSP?

Lorri A. Birkenbuel, Associate Professor of Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene at Montana Tech says ASSP club members are mostly Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and Industrial Hygiene (IH) students. Birkenbuel said, "with the owners of Butte Brewery and many of their employees Alumni of the OSH/IH program, it is a perfect place to hold the event."

Butte's Halloween Decorations

This year we went around town and found some really cool home decorations for Halloween. Here's what we found.

Butte's Ghost Signs Part 1

Uptown Butte was once one of the largest urban centers in the Northwest and the bustling heart of a thriving Mining City. Here is the first in a series of some of the ghost signs you can see Uptown that have survived through the decades.

Know Your Butte History: Standing Mine Headframes
