Though that may not be you, today we're going to sneak you into the insider's club.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have a close encounter with a moose, then buckle up, because it's something you can experience—if you're lucky and non-death-fearing—here in the Copper City. That’s right, the majestic and intimidating moose can be found hanging out in some of the most unexpected places, right in our own backyard.

Moose on the Flats

You’ve probably heard rumors about moose sightings around Butte, but did you know these giants have been spotted cruising across the flats? It’s not unusual to catch sight of one casually strolling through, on their way presumably to munch on a wop chop at the Freeway.

Harding Way: The Moose’s Favorite Butte Restaurant

But the real hotspot for these four-legged titans is along Harding Way, near the creek. Moose love munching on willow, and that’s exactly what draws them there. This area has sometimes turned into a moose buffet, offering up fresh, delicious willow. Don’t be surprised if you catch one dipping its head down, pulling up a mouthful of greens, completely oblivious to the people watching from a distance; yes, a distance, don't be dumb.

How to Spot a Moose in Butte

If you’re dying for a glimpse of one of these elusive creatures, your best bet is to head to Harding Way in the early morning or late afternoon. That’s when they’re most likely to be out foraging for food. Keep your eyes peeled along the creek, where their telltale long legs and dark brown coats stand out against the greenery. Be sure to give them plenty of space, just like your girlfriend in high school needed after you kept bringing her flowers and telling her you loved her.
