Though Butte America is no stranger to throwing an awesome, memorable party, there's nothing quite like the legendary celebrations of July 3rd and 4th. Your typical American town will usually stick to fireworks and parades on the 4th, with the city calling it bedtime by 9pm. Not our town. Butte makes sure everyone has a good time, whether it's on the 4th or, heck, even on the 3rd. So grab your sparklers (and Dr Boom) and let's take a look at the roots of this iconic Butte tradition.

(At Minimum) A Two-Day Extravaganza

Try as they might, no matter what they do, no one can contain the party. Nor can it be kept to just one measly day. No, the festivities have traditionally begun the 3rd of July with a bang—literally. The 3rd is always feels like it's the real party, with the 4th being a short recovery period (usually with mimosas and Bloody Marys). Fireworks set the backdrop with their massive, illegal (meant as a compliment) explosions, the sound of freedom echoing through the air.

But where did this double celebration come from?

Surprise! The Miners Had Something To Do with It

Butte's dual-day celebration of "America" (Butte America, that is) has its roots in the Copper City's mining heyday all those years ago. Back in the early 1900s, miners worked never-ending hours and rarely had any time off. When the 4th of July would roll around, it was an honored holiday and the miners, their families, and townspeople alike wanted to make most of the day. They would start the festivities early to make sure that everyone—and we mean everyone—could partake in the celebration.

The tradition eventually stuck, and now the 3rd of July is just as—if not more—anticipated than the Fourth of July itself, as locals and visitors gear up for two* days of epic fun.

Fireworks, Music, and More

Like all good 4th of July celebrations, the heart of Butte's festivities lie with its fireworks. On the evening of the 3rd, everyone in town seems to gather at various vantage points and neighborhoods around the city to light up the sky. The fireworks on display in Butte are renowned across the state and nation for their grandeur and sheer magnitude, with colorful explosions being witnessed for miles around, all while local bands and famous musicians rock out. The city really does turn into a huge carnival for the night.

Then comes the Fourth. The parade, of course, kicks off the day with floats, marching bands, and local organizations as they make their way through the packed streets of Butte. Children wildly wave flags, families line the streets, and the joy of cheer is had by all. Pancake breakfasts are found everywhere, hosted by local groups and foundations, inviting everyone to begin their days (or nurse their hangovers) with a stack of fluffy cakes of the pan.

Then, the party just keeps on going, making the city feel like it's the hottest and most fun party in the galaxy.

It Always Boils Down to the Community Spirit

In the end, what truly sets Butte's 3rd and 4th of July parties apart is the strong aroma of community. It's a beautiful time of year where the weather is warm, neighbors and strangers come together, old friends reunite, and new memories are forged in the fires of timelessness. The streets are abuzz with excitement, laughter, and joy—all celebrating the freedom we all share as Americans...and Butte Americans. For us here in Butte, these celebrations are more than just a party—they’re a cherished tradition that reflects our city’s everlasting spirit. And love for booze.
