The Ultimate Guide to Staying Safe in Montana’s Summer Storms
BUTTE, MT - We all like to participate in some outdoor fun during the summer. But with summer storms being more frequent, it's important to know how you can stay safe.
It's well known that Montana’s wild and beautiful landscapes are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking in the Rocky Mountains to camping by crystal-clear lakes, the Treasure State offers nothing but adventure to those who seek it.
But as any seasoned adventurer knows, Montana’s summer skies can turn from sunny to stormy in—quite literally—the blink of an eye. Here’s how to stay safe in case you find yourself caught in a summer storm.
Plan Like a Pro
Before you lace up your hiking boots or pack your camping gear, take a peek at the weather forecast. It might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many folks forget, and I'm definitely not referring to myself... Just remember, mountain weather can be unpredictable, so even if the forecast looks clear, be prepared for anything.
How to Know When a Storm is A-Brewin'
While you're out and about, it's smart to keep an eye on the sky. Cumulonimbus clouds (the tall, fluffy ones) are your biggest indicator that a storm might be brewing. And, of course, if you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to be a danger. The 30-30 rule is a handy trick: if the time between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is less than 30 seconds, seek shelter immediately.
But how does one find shelter out in the Montana wilderness? Avoid tall objects like trees and poles, as they attract lightning. If you’re caught in an open area, crouch down on the balls of your feet, keeping your head low and your hands over your ears. Though you may look like you're protecting yourself from an invisible bomb, it minimizes your contact with the ground and reduces your risk. And just may save your life.
Stay Dry to Stay Safe
Though we all love to cool off in a lake or river to get out of the summer heat, they're not where you want to be during a storm. If you’re swimming, boating, or fishing, get out of the water immediately at the first sign of a storm. Water is a great conductor of electricity, and you don’t want to be the reason lightning strikes.
Storm-Proof Your Site
When setting up camp, avoid ridgelines, open fields, and the tallest trees. Instead, look for a lower, wooded area with evenly spaced trees of similar height. Make sure your tent is set up away from streams or rivers, as heavy rain can cause flash flooding. If a storm hits, stay inside your tent, but avoid touching any metal poles or wet surfaces.
We all want the best campsite with the prettiest views. However, it's important that when you set up camp, you avoid ridgelines, open fields, and the tallest of the trees. Ideally, you want to find a lower, wooded area with evenly-spaced trees that are similar in height. Try to avoid setting up your tent next to streams or rivers, since heavy rain can cause heavy flooding, which will definitely make your socks wet—and nobody likes that. And remember: if a storm does hit, stay inside your tent but avoid touching any metal poles or wet surfaces.
Sometimes, You Gotta Bail :(
When outside and adventuring through the Montana landscapes, everyone knows it's all about pushing limits. But... safety does come first. You can always come back to hike that trail or catch that fish another time, believe it or not. Your safety is the most important thing, and Montana’s mountains will be waiting for you, storm or shine. I promise.
Essential Gear for Stormy Weather
Don't give me that look, you have the room for it. Even if it's a gorgeous, sunny day, it's beneficial to pack the essentials: a waterproof jacket or foldable, some extra layers or replacements, a flashlight (you should really have this one already), and plenty of food and water in case of emergency. Real ones will bring a weather radio, sat phone, or—if you aren't in military training—a pocket charger for your smartphone, as they can all keep you posted on the current conditions and update you on any changes.
Just Do Your Best
Montana’s summer storms are a reminder of nature’s power and beauty. While they can be intimidating, they’re also part of what makes exploring this state so exciting. With the right knowledge and preparation, you can enjoy all the adventure Montana has to offer, even when the skies turn gray.
So, whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a weekend warrior, keep these tips in mind and embrace the thrill of Montana’s summer storms. Stay safe, stay dry, and most importantly, stay adventurous.
