But don’t worry—if there are ghosts inside, they’re likely just miners checking in for another night’s rest.

After all, this place has been offering weary souls a place to stay since 1913.

Originally built as the Miner’s Savings and Trust Co. after the first bank burned to the ground in 1912 (ominous foreshadowing, anyone?), the building has lived many lives.

The ground floor was a bank, but upstairs, a different kind of business was booming: furnished rooms run by Katherine and Lawrence Graves, welcoming Butte’s mining class into what was essentially one of the city’s first boutique hotels.

The Graves might be long gone, but it’s not hard to imagine a few old guests never really checked out.

In fact, upon my initial visit to the hotel, I was greeted by the incredibly friendly (and who end up being very understanding) staff, who was to show me around as I took photos for this article. Only, upon entry to the hotel, both of the batteries for my camera I had fully charged had mysteriously been depleted, requiring me to come back on a different day...

The Incredible Blend of Beauty, Mystery, and History in the Miner's Hotel (Photos)

From miners to mail carriers—the first floor even served as a post office in the ‘70s—the building has seen its fair share of comings and goings. Today, it’s a beautifully restored boutique hotel with twelve uniquely styled rooms, each with private bathrooms (an upgrade from the original six shared ones, thank goodness).

And beneath it all? One of Montana’s coolest hidden gems: the 51 Below Speakeasy, tucked inside what used to be a fur vault.

But here's where things get spooky. The creaking floors, the original vault door, the dim glow of the speakeasy... It all makes for a chillingly fun experience. And we’ve got the photos to prove it.
