We Got It Wrong: Butte Tap Water Is Safe to Drink
BUTTE, MT - Dear Readers,
I owe you an apology. Earlier, I published an article suggesting that a potential contamination issue posed risks to the safety of tap water in Montana. After further investigation and consultation with local health officials, I can confirm this information was incorrect.
What Happened?
My initial report was based on unverified information, which led to unnecessary concern among residents. Local health authorities, including officials from the Butte-Silver Bow County water plant, have assured us that Montana’s water supply remains clean, safe, and meets all federal and state safety standards.
I deeply regret the confusion and concern caused by our earlier report. Ensuring public trust is my highest priority, and I understand the responsibility that comes with delivering accurate information.
The Truth About Montana’s Water
According to Butte-Silver Bow Water Treatment Superintendent Jim Keenan, “There is no current risk to the water supply in Montana drinking water. All testing confirms that it is safe for drinking, cooking, and everyday use.”
Montana’s water infrastructure and rigorous quality checks ensure the continued safety and reliability of tap water across the state. He has assured me that they work very hard to ensure our water is safe, and reports like mine—directly spreading misinformation—damages the reputation Mr. Keenan and others work so hard to maintain. For that especially I feel deep regret and apologize to him and his team directly.
My Commitment to Accuracy
To prevent this from happening again, I am implementing stricter protocols for fact-checking and verification before publishing stories that may affect public health, safety, and community, while respecting the people responsible for upholding them.
I appreciate your patience and understanding as I work to regain your trust. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly at devon.brosnan@townsquaremedia.com.
Sincerely,
Devon Brosnan
