The fire was first reported around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from local, state, and federal agencies. Firefighting resources on the scene include DNRC and Forest Service engines, two helicopters, and air attack support.

Crews worked through the night, taking advantage of calmer winds to slow the fire’s spread. Today, firefighters are continuing suppression efforts, laying hose lines and coordinating with engines to protect nearby communities.
Smoke from the Horn Fire may be visible from both Highway 287 and Highway 87, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions. Pre-evacuations remain in effect for residents northeast of Highway 87, and officials urge those affected to contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for updated information.

Montana Highway 87, which was in the process of reopening, is now closed to all traffic again from US Highway 287 to US Highway 20 in Island Park, as authorities work to ensure safety in the fire zone. Horn Creek Road will remain closed until further notice.
Authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions, as winds and dry grass could accelerate the fire’s growth. Firefighters are urging residents to remain vigilant, follow evacuation instructions, and stay clear of affected areas.
While the cause has been identified as lightning, the fire’s rapid growth underscores the ongoing risk of wildfires in Montana during the dry summer months.
The Horn Fire serves as a stark reminder of how quickly wildfires can ignite and spread in rural Montana, and crews are working tirelessly to protect both property and natural landscapes in the path of the blaze.
