Yellowstone National Park is preparing for another busy summer as roads begin to open for the 2026 season. Select roads and entrances are set to open on Friday, April 17.

Spring is a great time to visit YNP if you want to see all the attractions without large crowds. It gets much busier during the summer. The opening date is weather permitting, so hopefully Mother Nature cooperates.

The North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana, will be the first to welcome vehicles. From these entrances, travelers can reach Mammoth Hot Springs, Lamar Valley, Norris Geyser Basin, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and Old Faithful. The Northeast Entrance near Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana, will also be open.

Additional park roads are scheduled to reopen gradually throughout May, depending on weather conditions. For exact routes and updates, visitors are encouraged to check the Yellowstone Park Roads website before arriving.

Tips for Visiting Yellowstone National Park in 2026

If you're planning a trip to Yellowstone this year, here are a few things you need to know, according to park staff.

    • Check current conditions before you arrive
    • Bring appropriate clothing and footwear for winter conditions. Many trails and boardwalks are still snow-covered this time of year
    • Expect limited services during the spring
    • Anticipate potential road closures
    • Expect delays (up to 30 minutes) if entering through the North Entrance in Gardiner
    • Stay at least 100 yards away from bears, wolves, and cougars, and 25 yards from all other wildlife. It is your responsibility to maintain safe distances at all times.
    • Always carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Grizzly bears are on the move in the park, and your chances of spotting one are much greater during the spring season. Enjoy your visit, and respect the rules while in the park to ensure you have a good time.
