When you think about the Old West, images of horses, weathered storefronts, cowboys, and rugged pioneers usually come to mind. In many ways, those scenes still feel alive in Montana, especially at Bannack State Park. Located just outside of Dillon, Montana’s first territorial capital, offers visitors a rare chance to step back in time. Once a year, that experience becomes even more alive during Bannack Days, an event that has been celebrating Montana history for 5 decades.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Bannack Days. To honor that legacy, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, along with the Bannack Association, is inviting artists to help tell the story. An art contest has been announced! They are calling on creatives to submit original work inspired by Montana’s pioneer era.
“Art entries must feature a scene or subject related to Montana’s pioneer days or Bannack’s early history. Art entries must be submitted by March 1. Details on contest rules and entry information can be found here.” - Montana FWP
The lucky winner will do more than just earn recognition. The winning artist will receive a cash prize, and their piece will be featured on official Bannack Days merchandise for 2026.

The Hell's A-Roarin' Horse Drive

The Hell’s A-Roarin’ Horse Drive happens every Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner, Montana, as hundreds of horses are driven from the rodeo grounds up to the mountain town of Jardine. Hosted by Susan and Warren Johnson of Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters, this Western tradition honors veterans and supports them in a meaningful way. All net proceeds from the event’s live auction go toward purchasing Action Trackchairs—custom, all-terrain wheelchairs that help disabled veterans regain their freedom and access to the outdoors. It’s a powerful mix of community, heritage, and heartfelt purpose.
