The 9th Annual Butte Cystic Fibrosis NCAA March Madness Calcutta was held on March 15th at the Butte Country Club. This is an annual event that raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is not a government-subsidized entity, meaning they have to raise their own funds to continue to add tomorrows for thousands of people around the country.

This year’s event raised $35,560 for the Foundation as well as $7,460 for the Cody Dieruf Foundation in Bozeman. The Cody Dieruf Foundation provided financial assistance to CF patients in Montana and their families for medical treatment, travel expenses, and physical fitness activities to keep them as healthy as possible.

You can read more about the great work the Cody Dieruf Foundation does HERE.

Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. People with CF have a mutation in a gene that causes cells to not move/attract water correctly, making the mucus in the various organs thick and sticky. That thick and sticky mucus in the lungs clogs airways and traps germs leading to infections, respiratory failure, and other complications.

The mucus in the pancreas prevents the release of digestive enzymes that helps the body absorb food and nutrients. Resulting in malnutrition and poor growth.

You can read more about Cystic Fibrosis as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation HERE. That will give you a good idea of what we are raising money for.

Events like this are paying off for Cystic Fibrosis patients with the development of new prescription drugs, which are improving the quality of life and extending the life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients, and which would not have been discovered without funding from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.   Without events like this, money for the research behind these drugs would not be available.

The total amount raised for the CF Foundation from the Butte Calcutta alone now stands at $220,000. An incredible sum of money, made possible by all the people who take part in the Calcutta.

The organizers of the event want to express their deepest thanks to everyone who has supported this event through the years and look forward to many more years of the Calcutta.
