As children prepare for numerous parties, haunted houses, and trick-or-treating this Halloween, it's always a good idea to remind them about staying safe!

It's great to have a good time but ensure safety outweighs any other factors. So here are the top ways to keep you and your precious little peeps safe this Halloween season brought to you by Thriftway Super Stops. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, babysitters, and more...YOU GOT THIS!!

When trick or treating or any time of the year, instill the following:

1. Use crosswalks and avoid crossing in the middle of the street. The biggest thing is always to look both ways when crossing.

2. Keep your head up when walking. Avoid distractions by putting phones and other devices away. Also, make sure everyone walks and not runs across the street.

3. Always walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. It's also important to walk on direct routes without encountering street crossings.

4. Watch for cars backing up or turning in the vicinity. Teach children never to cross between parked cars or dart in and out behind parked vehicles.

5. Remind kids to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

6. Good rule of thumb is for an adult to be with a child under 12 while trick-or-treating. As for unsupervised, older children, remind them to stay in familiar areas that are well-lit and encourage them to trick-or-treat with other friends. The buddy system is the best option when out and about.

Now, let's talk costumes!

1. Get creative and use reflective tape on costumes and Halloween bags. Choosing light colors is a good bet.

2. To ensure drivers see your kiddos, have them carry or attach a glow stick to their garments or ensure they're equipped with a working flashlight.

3. Prevent your little ones from tripping and falling on their costumes by ensuring they fit correctly.

4. Masks are cool and all, but when out trick or treating, encourage youngsters to wear face paint or makeup instead so that their vision isn't impaired. Then, save the masks for a house party or any controlled environment.

Candy Safety!

1. Although trick-or-treating can be very exciting due to the various amounts of candy accrued, every morsel of chocolate and anything in between must be thoroughly checked by an adult for tampering before consumption. Unfortunately, such scenarios of tampering have occurred for decades. Additionally, with the constant fear of fentanyl and other substances invading our neighborhoods, adults must keep a watchful eye on who, what, where and when children come in contact.

2. Remind children never to eat candy from their bags until a family member or trusted adult has double-checked it.

Driver safety on Halloween involves:

1. Adults, slow down and stay alert in residential areas.

2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections and in areas least expected. Plus, always drive very carefully and at a slow pace near alleys, curbs, and driveways,

3. Limit distractions such as phones and anything else that keeps you from staying 100% focused on the road.

Our trick-or-treaters are one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, so let's all work to keep them safe this Halloween season! Enjoy, and remember to keep these safety tips on hand courtesy of Townsquare Media and Thriftway Super Stops!
