Butte’s Most Underrated River is One You Wouldn’t Expect
BUTTE, MT - Montanans are spoiled when it comes to rivers.

We’ve got the Yellowstone, the Madison, the Clark Fork, the Big Hole.
But in the shadow of Butte—Montana’s most historic city—it’s easy to overlook the humble waterways that snake through the hills and gulches just outside town.
Sure, people fish the Big Hole and float the Jefferson. But few take time to appreciate the quiet beauty of a much closer, lesser-known gem, one that’s shaped the landscape and the mining legacy of Butte itself.
Drive west from uptown Butte and you might miss it.

What is Butte's Most Underrated River?
Just a modest creek winding through the hills, often hidden by trees or running quietly beneath old bridges and past forgotten mine sites. But this river’s story is tightly woven into Butte’s.
It’s seen the city in its boomtown glory and its environmental reckoning. And today, it’s one of the most fascinating comeback stories in Montana hydrology.
We’re talking about Silver Bow Creek.
Once dubbed one of the most polluted streams in America, Silver Bow Creek was the unfortunate dumping ground for mining waste for nearly a century. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, it flowed red with tailings. Fish couldn’t live in it. People wouldn’t walk near it.
But thanks to one of the largest Superfund cleanups in U.S. history, Silver Bow Creek is changing.
The water runs clearer now. Native trout have returned to some sections. There are bike trails and greenways being built alongside it. It’s becoming something few thought possible: a river worth enjoying.
So the next time you’re in Butte, take a detour off I-90 or walk the Greenway trail near Ramsay. Sit by the water. Watch for trout rings or a curious muskrat. Because Silver Bow Creek isn’t just Butte’s most underrated river—it might be its most hopeful.
