The Butte Community Wellness and Resilience Hub is poised to revolutionize recreation, wellness, and emergency preparedness in our community.

Thanks to a likely $20 million grant from the EPA, this multi-functional center is set to become a beacon of resilience and an essential resource for our city. Here's why this project is such a big deal and how it’s coming to life.

Why Butte Deserves This Facility

For decades, Butte has carried the heavy weight of its Superfund designation, stemming from its historic mining and smelting legacy.

The scars of environmental and economic decline have left the community grappling with challenges that demand innovative solutions. The Wellness and Resilience Hub is part of that solution, addressing pressing social and environmental issues with a facility designed to uplift the community.

The grant application, crafted in collaboration with Water & Environmental Technologies, makes this initiative an essential step toward revitalization.

How It Will Be Funded and Operated

The anticipated $20 million grant from the EPA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants Program will fund construction, while operational costs, estimated at $560,000 annually, will be covered by rentals, fees, and programming revenues. The feasibility study projects that the facility will generate enough income to sustain itself.

From gym rentals for basketball and volleyball to event and meeting spaces, the center is designed to recover 100% of its operational costs.

Programming will include emergency preparedness, wellness activities, and recreational offerings, ensuring the hub serves both as a community asset and a revenue generator.

What’s Coming to Butte, and When to Expect It

The Butte Community Wellness and Resilience Hub will be built near the Civic Center on land that was once part of the contaminated Parrot Tailings area.

While the exact square footage and timeline depend on final funding and design details, the vision is clear: a multi-use facility with basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts, alongside spaces for events and community programs.

In addition to recreation, the hub will double as a shelter during wildfire smoke events, a critical feature as climate change exacerbates air quality challenges. Programming will focus on resiliency, emergency preparedness, and wellbeing, making it a versatile resource for Butte residents.

From addressing environmental justice to creating a space for recreation and emergency support, this facility will enrich lives and strengthen the community.

With funding nearly secured and plans underway, the countdown to Butte’s newest incredible facility has officially begun. Stay tuned for updates, because the future of Butte is looking brighter than ever.
