This drastic measure follows the detection of Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially deadly bacterium, in their products.

Let's take a look at the details so you can stay safe.

Scope of the Recall

The recall encompasses a vast array of RTE meat and poultry items produced between May 31 and October 8, 2024. Though they were produced in early months, a few of the products may still be lingering on shelves across Montana.

These products were distributed nationwide to various establishments, including restaurants, schools, and institutions. Alarmingly, the contaminated products have infiltrated major retailers such as Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and Target, potentially reaching millions of consumers.

Health Implications

Listeria monocytogenes is notorious for causing listeriosis, a severe infection that poses significant risks to older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal issues. In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Consumer Guidance

Consumers are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Products subject to recall bear establishment numbers "51205" or "P-51205" inside or under the USDA mark of inspection. Given the extensive distribution network, some products may display different establishment numbers due to further processing by other entities.

It is imperative to meticulously review product labels and avoid consuming any items that are part of this recall. These products should be disposed of immediately or returned to the place of purchase.

Preventive Measures and Recommendations

To mitigate the risk of listeriosis, consumers should adhere to the following precautions:

  • Avoid Consumption: Do not consume any products identified in the recall.
  • Proper Disposal: Dispose of recalled products safely to prevent accidental consumption.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Individuals experiencing symptoms after consuming potentially contaminated products should promptly contact healthcare providers.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly check updates from the FSIS and USDA for the latest information on the recall and affected products.

This unprecedented recall serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in our food supply chain. The potential health risks associated with Listeria monocytogenes contamination are profound, necessitating immediate and decisive action from consumers, retailers, and institutions alike. Vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines are paramount to safeguarding public health in the face of this alarming development.
