An Exciting New Update On Butte’s Big Development Plans
BUTTE, MT - Have you tried to understand all the development plans in store for Butte but found it hard and tedious to try and keep up?
It seems like everyday there is a new update or change to the plans that promise to bring Butte into a new era: with new shopping experiences, more grocery stores, and big social spaces for everyone to hang out in and enjoy.
However, with announced stores suddenly backing out, others being rumored, and most being kept secret, it's difficult to know exactly what is happening with the plaza plans and where they're at in the process.
Let's Take a Look at What We Know So Far
Butte Plaza Mall, a long-standing fixture on Harrison Avenue, is on the brink of some significant transformations, and we have all been equally buzzing with anticipation. But what's actually planned for the mall itself?
The mall recently caught the attention of three developers from Corvallis, Oregon, who purchased the property for $8.5 million. Their vision for the mall includes attracting a variety of new tenants, aiming to revitalize the shopping experience in Butte.
While they’ve been a bit tight-lipped about specifics, we do know that their plans include bringing in a mix of new stores. These range from two clothing stores to a sporting goods store, two craft stores, and even a beauty shop.
And for those of us who have been hoping for a new grocery option, there’s good news: a chain grocery store is also in the works, though who exactly hasn't been determined—though they've been happy to share that large national chains have visited the lot multiple times.
So What's Cornerstone Plaza?
Just down the road, another exciting development is underway. Dave Leon, a developer based in New York and the CEO of PF Management Group, is behind the $26.5 million “Cornerstone Plaza.” This project, which is set to bring 10 to 11 national stores and restaurants to Butte, would be the largest of its kind since the construction of the Plaza Mall itself 53 years ago.
Leon’s project hit a small snag recently when Sportsman’s Warehouse, initially slated to be a major tenant, backed out of their lease. Despite this, Leon remains optimistic, noting that he’s in talks with several high-profile national chains. Though he’s staying mum on the specifics for now, he’s hinted at interest from major home improvement and grocery stores, which would be a big win for Butte. Plus, a Planet Fitness is already confirmed to be part of the lineup, adding to the appeal.
Alright, What’s Next for Butte's Development?
As with any large development, there are a lot of moving parts, and patience is key. Leon has mentioned that getting all the tenants on board has been like “herding cats,” but he expects to share more details very soon.
In the meantime, groundwork has already begun near Bert Mooney Airport, and a new traffic light is planned to help manage what’s likely to become a busier stretch of Harrison Avenue.
As for the Butte Plaza Mall itself, plans for demolition work are in the pipeline, with hopes for a groundbreaking this fall. Karen Byrnes, Butte-Silver Bow’s Community Development director, has assured the community that the county is working closely with the new owners to bring these plans to life.
Everyone is Excited for Butte
These developments signal a promising future for Butte’s shopping scene. With a mix of new stores and eateries on the horizon, both at the mall and the upcoming Cornerstone Plaza, there’s a lot to look forward to. Keep an eye out for updates as these projects progress.
